A Greener Future for Gala Policies

A new ten-year management plan has been unveiled to help protect, restore and enhance one of Galashiels’ most cherished green spaces – Gala Policies.

Developed in close partnership with the local community, the plan outlines a shared vision for the woodland’s future between 2025 and 2035, with a strong focus on enhancing biodiversity, improving accessibility, and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Proposals include restoring the pond, woodland and grassland habitats, upgrading paths and seating, and increasing the number of community activities on site. A new ‘Friends of Gala Policies’ group is also set to be established to support the brilliant work already being done by local volunteers.

Some work is already underway, with pupils from Galashiels Academy recently lending a hand as part of their volunteering efforts – taking part in litter picks and helping to manage the spread of Rhododendron.
The plan’s success will depend on securing external funding with Scottish Borders Council is already starting the process of applying for grants to support the improvements.
