Another Empty Shop Finds a New Home

Bringing more businesses into Galashiels town centre is one of the key priorities for BID for Galashiels, and one of its newest initiatives is already making a real difference.

The Vacant Shops Academy project was started to help remove the barriers that can prevent businesses from taking on commercial premises. Whether it’s finding the right property, arranging viewings, understanding commercial leases or navigating negotiations, the Academy provides practical, impartial support from first enquiry through to collecting the keys.

One of the first success stories is Rock Your Garden, owned by Lee McIlduff, which is preparing to open its first permanent premises at 47 Channel Street.

Having built a loyal customer base through markets and events across the Borders, Lee was ready to take the next step but found the commercial property process daunting. Working with the BID for Galashiels and the Vacant Shops Academy, he explored a number of suitable premises before finding the right home for his growing business.

Lee said: “Since moving to Galashiels I’ve had the ambition of getting a shop, but being a bit out of my depth I needed help and direction on the property side of things. Having someone in my corner who could show me the options, walk me through potential business costs and give me impartial advice on what to look out for in the lease made all the difference. I couldn’t have done this without the support.”

Every vacant unit that becomes occupied is a positive step for Galashiels, helping to create a busier, more vibrant town centre for businesses, residents and visitors alike.

If you’re thinking about opening your first shop, relocating your business, or if you have a vacant commercial property, BID for Galashiels is here to help. Email claire@bidforgalashiels.com for support.
