“There are too many vacant shops” is a phrase often heard in Galashiels.
Tackling that issue is a key focus for BID for Galashiels, with work underway to bring more empty units back into use and strengthen the overall feel of the town centre.
Progress Already Seen
Douglas Bridge offers a clear example of what can be achieved.
In 2022, the Tapestry Way study identified the area as having a high level of vacancy. Today, every unit is occupied.
This change has been driven by the combined efforts of Energise Galashiels Trust, local landlords, and the businesses and organisations who have taken on these spaces, including Hike & Bike Hub, Galashiels SCIO and The HYRE Co.
It demonstrates how quickly progress can be made when the right support and opportunities are in place.
Why This Work Matters
Vacant units are not just a visual issue. They influence how people experience the town centre.
A higher number of empty premises can affect confidence, reduce footfall and make areas feel less active. In contrast, occupied and well-used spaces create a more welcoming environment, encouraging people to spend more time in the town and supporting local businesses.
Reducing vacancy is therefore an important part of building a stronger, more vibrant town centre.
Current Work Underway
BID for Galashiels is working in partnership with the Vacant Shops Academy, a programme with experience supporting towns across the UK to bring empty units back into use.
The current phase of work focuses on:
- Identifying vacant properties across the town
- Understanding the reasons behind vacancy
- Promoting opportunities to potential occupiers
- Connecting suitable businesses with available units
- Supporting the process between tenants, landlords and agents
This structured approach is designed to make it easier for businesses to take on premises and for property owners to find suitable tenants.
Looking Ahead
The aim is to build on the progress already seen and replicate this across more areas of Galashiels.
Bringing vacant units back into use supports increased footfall, strengthens the mix of businesses and helps create a town centre that people want to visit, spend time in and return to.
This work will continue over the coming months as opportunities are developed and more spaces are brought back into active use.
