Something exciting is taking shape in Galashiels.
Since February, a small working group made up of local organisations, partners and community voices has been coming together to explore an idea – an application for Galashiels to become UK Town of Culture 2028.
This is not about one organisation or one project. It’s about all of us.
The UK Town of Culture programme, launched by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, celebrates the creativity, heritage and community spirit found in towns across the country. Inspired by the success of UK City of Culture, it offers places like ours the chance to tell their story on a national stage.
We have now submitted an initial expression of interest for Galashiels to take part.

At this early stage, the focus is on sharing a vision – what makes Galashiels special, the stories we want to tell, and how culture already lives and breathes in our town.
Because culture isn’t just big events or performances.
It’s our people, our creativity, our history and our everyday moments.
From our proud textile heritage to the artists, makers, groups and communities shaping Galashiels today – there is already so much happening here. Often quietly, often behind the scenes. This is about recognising that, celebrating it, and building something together.
The Town of Culture opportunity gives us a reason to come together as a town and imagine what could be possible if we all play a part.
We’re still at the beginning of this journey, and this is just the start of the conversation. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more about what this could look like – and, most importantly, how you can get involved.
The shortlist for the next stage is expected to be announced in Spring 2026.
Let’s see where this could take us.
