The Great Tapestry of Scotland, based in Galashiels, has officially launched its 300 Words competition for 2026, inviting young writers from across the country to take part.
Previously run locally, the competition has now been extended to schools nationwide, giving pupils from all over Scotland the opportunity to participate and share their creativity.
To mark the launch, schools were invited to join a live online session on the 9th of March, introducing the competition and offering inspiration for this year’s entries. The session featured Andrew Crummy, the artist behind the Great Tapestry of Scotland, who shared insights into some of the tapestry’s panels and the stories that inspired them.
Sandy Maxwell-Forbes, director of the Great Tapestry of Scotland, said the team was excited to see what young writers would create this year after the high standard set in previous competitions.
The 300 Words competition encourages pupils to explore storytelling through short creative pieces inspired by Scotland’s history, culture and the themes within the Great Tapestry.
With the competition now open to schools across Scotland, it promises to bring even more young voices and imaginative stories into the spotlight in 2026. Click here to enter.
