Heartland Market Finds a New Home in Galashiels’ Market Square

The much-loved Heartland Market is on the move. From Saturday 7th June, the popular monthly market will take up residence in its new – and fitting – home in Market Square, right opposite the Pavilion Cinema in Galashiels.

Founded in 2022 by Galashiels-based businesswomen Lauren Jamieson, Esther McLuckie and Emily McGowan, the Heartland Market was established with the aim of bringing the heart back into the town centre. Since its launch on Channel Street, the market has grown into a vibrant community hub, attracting hundreds of visitors and showcasing the very best in local talent from the Scottish Borders and beyond.

The relocation to Market Square marks the next chapter in the market’s journey.

“Market Square offers the kind of open, inviting space we’ve been dreaming of,” said co-founder Lauren Jamieson. “It flows better, feels better, and gives us the opportunity to create a more relaxed, enjoyable experience for everyone who comes along.”

The new location is also strategically placed to draw visitors from Gala Water Retail Park into the centre of town – a move that market organisers hope will benefit not just stallholders, but local retailers as well.

Shoppers can expect the same diverse mix of artisan traders, crafters, and bakers that have defined the market since day one – along with a few new reasons to linger. Plans for the expanded space include giant retro games, occasional live music and dance performances, and additional seating to encourage visitors to slow down, connect, and soak up the atmosphere.

Esther McLuckie, co-founder, added: “We’ve loved our time on Channel Street, and we’re so grateful to the community for their support. But we’ve also listened carefully to feedback from both traders and visitors, and we feel Market Square gives us the best possible platform to grow.”

Fellow co-founder Emily McGowan said: “This move is about evolution. The market has always been rooted in creativity and community, and Market Square gives us the flexibility to do even more – more collaboration, more experiences, and more of what people love. We can’t wait to welcome everyone to the new space.”

Since launching, the market has become a monthly fixture in the town’s calendar. Prioritising Galashiels-based businesses and offering a constantly rotating line-up of stalls, the market continues to support local enterprise while giving shoppers something new to discover each time they visit.

The Heartland Market takes place on the first Saturday of each month from 10am to 2pm. Organisers are encouraging local businesses, community groups, and residents to help spread the word – and to come along and enjoy the new setting.
