Town of Culture 2028 Update + Our ‘Textile Takeover’

Since we first shared that we were exploring a bid for UK Town of Culture 2028, things have moved forward. Our expression of interest has now officially been submitted.

It’s a big moment for the town.

At the heart of our bid are our “Braw Yarns” – the stories, heritage and character that make this place what it is. From our textile past to the creativity, energy and ideas shaping us today, this is about telling our story, in our own way.

And the response so far has said everything.

People from across the town and beyond have stepped forward with support, ideas and encouragement. It shows the pride we have in where we live and what we’re building together.

A Shared Journey

We know we’re not the only ones. Towns across the region and the UK have put themselves forward too, making this a competitive process. We now move into the next stage and wait to hear if we’ve been shortlisted, with news expected in late spring 2026.

It’s the waiting that’s the hardest part.

But we’re not standing still.

A Textile Takeover

In May, we’ll be hosting a textile takeover across our social media channels, celebrating our past, present and future. Textiles run through everything here – they are part of our identity, our history and our creativity. From long-established heritage to new ideas and fresh talent, it’s all part of our story.

Be Part of It

You can help us promote the bid and show your support – downloadable assets are available to use across your own channels, helping us spread the word far and wide.

And we want to hear from you too.

If we were Town of Culture, what would you want to see happen here? What ideas, events or projects would you love to be part of?
