Moderate 7.2 mile tarmac route passing Old Gala House, The Market Cross and Tea Street before rounding Gala Hill. Onto the meeting of the River Tweed and Ettrick Water at Old Tweed Bridge before returning alongside the Tweed and Gala Water with views of Abbotsford House. Suitable for confident riders/family groups, as route is through town centre then on quiet roads out to Old Tweed Bridge and Boleside.

  1. Starting at the Interchange, travel along the shared path to the end of the car park.
  2. Turn right onto the road in Market Street (one way street) and continue straight on passing Market Square on the right.
  3. Continue ahead into Cornmill Square with the Burgh Chambers and memorial to the left and the Fountain on the left. Follow the road to the right then turn left into St John’s Street.
  4. Continue ahead until the T junction at Scott Street. (Gates to Scott Park are opposite)
  5. Turn left onto Scott Street and travel uphill and you will pass Old Gala House on the left.
  6. At the top of the hill, Market Cross sits in the centre of the crossroads -Turn rightimmediately after the Market Cross into Elm Row. On the left you will pass Tea Street.
  7. Remain on Elm Row uphill following the road up to Gala Hill and out of town rounding the hill. Remain on the road out into the countryside passing Hollybush and onward until the T junction at The Rink.
  8. Turn left on the road blue signs route 1. Travel downhill to the Old Tweed Bridge on the right. Here the River Tweed and Ettrick Water meet.
  9. At the edge of the bridge follow the cycle route shared path route 1 for Galashiels.
  10. Follow the shared path under the road bridge. Up a small climb to the shared path alongside the road then off to the left towards Boleside.
  11. Continue on the shared path until it ends at Boleside Road. Turn right on Boleside Road and travel alongside the River Tweed.
  12. Continue ahead up the small hill with a view across the river to Abbotsford House. Continue on to the roundabout at Galafoot under the road bridge. Cross the roundabout and follow Blue shared path signs on Winston Road with the Football and Rugby stadia to your left.
  13. Along Winston Road on the shared path then left at blue sign Galashiels spur (1) Gala link.
  14. Follow the shared path alongside the Gala Water. Continue ahead on the shared path passing the Mushroom Bridge and Borders College Campus.
  15. Follow the shared path along Dale Street and turn right across the Gala Water on the steel bridge. Carry on with the Gala Water on the left along the shared path until the roundabout at Asda.
  16. Cross over and continue straight ahead on the shared path following signs for railway and town centre, returning to the Interchange.
